Design and Development of Aircraft Seating. By redesigning conventional seat architecture and utilising a double cantilever, we were able to create more knee and leg room than is possible with any other design. Providing a seat pan which moves forward and downward, increasing the angle of recline up to 40 degrees within a fixed outer shell makes it possible to sleep on long haul without increasing the seat pitch. This concept, which maximises space in the tight confines of Economy and eliminates the physical elements that can contribute to the onset of DVT, won British Invention of the Year's top Diamond Award in 2006. In October 2010 Blue Sky won Aviation Week's global Supplier Innovation Challenge in the aero structures category. Because our seats seamlessly convert from fixed Economy to a dynamic Premium sliding spec, airlines can change cabin layout on any flight according to passenger demand, without physically altering the seat pitch, driving Ancillary Revenue through simple comfort upgrades, which can be booked on line, at check in or on board and paid for by a variety of charging methods from credit and loyalty cards to frequent flyer programmes. With a simple upgrade fee of £20, an airline can earn another £2m per aircraft, per annum. Blue Sky is the first to focus on the seat in order to leverage Ancillary Revenue, rather than depending on commissions from hotels and car hire and on board sales of duty free goods, food and beverages. Markets include Rail and Marine.
